Testing Your Vision Online

Can you really go through a vision test online? With modern technology available at your fingertips, yes, you can test your vision by clicking on a link, or by using an app on your phone or tablet. Read on to learn more about these modern vision screenings and whether or not they're really ideal.

How is it performed?

During an eye exam at your optometrist's office, they have you sit in a chair and use a refraction system to determine the lens power you need to improve your vision. This is where your doctor asks you, "One or two?" several times over, so they can determine which lens is most beneficial for you. An online vision test attempts to replace this element of the eye exam. You have to stand a certain distance from the screen, cover one eye, and let the program know which image is clearer. The entire process is quick and simple enough to do right in your living room.

Are the results accurate?

Results may be close to your optimal prescription, but probably not 100% accurate. Online vision tests are more of a novelty than a true medical vision screening. If you haven't had your eyes checked in a while, for instance, you might choose to have an online vision test just to see how much your vision has changed. Or if it seems like your current eyeglasses or contact lens prescription isn't strong enough anymore, the online vision test is an easy way to determine if it's time to make an appointment with your eye doctor.

Do I still need an eye exam?

Yes. While an online vision screening might let you know what your prescription is going to be, it doesn't provide a doctor-approved prescription you can use to get glasses or contacts. You still need an eye exam with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Even if you have 20/20 vision and have never needed to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, you still need an eye exam regularly — or as recommended.

An eye exam is your doctor's chance to evaluate the overall health of your eyes, optic nerve, retinas, and surrounding tissues. Since your eyes are prone to degenerative conditions, including glaucoma, as you get older, your eye doctor checks for early warning signs of potential problems. This way, they can start treating the issue and work to preserve your vision and eye health right away.

If you haven't had an eye exam in a while, it's time to book your appointment. Since eye exams and vision screenings are standard health tests, you can easily schedule your visit during your lunch break. To learn more, talk to companies like Quality Eye Care.
